AD&D is supplemental insurance that can be added to any life, health, disability, medical expense insurance policy or be purchased as a stand-alone policy.
This covers the insured's death or dismemberment of a body part (Arm, Leg, Hand or loss of vision) as a result of an accident so if the insured's death was due to a sickness this will not pay out any benefit to their beneficiary. When it is added to a Life or Health policy the AD&D optional rider will pay an additional death benefit as long as the insured's death is the result of an accident.
Employers can provide as an option to their employees to purchase even though they will cover basic life and AD&D during the duration of the employee's position with the company. Once that individual is no longer considered employed there is no coverage. Hence the importance of seeking outside coverage when it relates to Life insurance and other supplemental insurance.
